That is exactly the anxiety currently surrounding the fate of IKN (Nusantara Capital City). As discussions resurface about Jakarta remaining the capital, one question haunts us: “What happens to the trillions of rupiah in taxpayer money already turned into concrete in the middle of the Borneo jungle?”
At Gerakan Mandiri Bangsa, we believe true change is born from the people, not from elite directives in air-conditioned rooms. The current IKN dilemma is a clear portrait of centralized developmentādecided from the top, while the people bear the risk when the plan falters.
Letās be honest. 150 Trillion IDR is not pocket change. If that money had been used for SME capital or national logistics, our economy might be sprinting by now. But the die is cast. The infrastructure is there.
Now, we have two choices: let it become a “Ghost City,” or shift our mindset to turn these assets into a foundation for national sovereignty.

The big lesson here isn’t about the buildings; it’s about reading the direction of the wind. Today, a billion-dollar tank can be crippled by a cheap drone priced like a smartphone.
What does this mean? Physical structures are just the “shell.” The contentātechnology and strategyāis where true sovereignty lies. Instead of worrying about moving bureaucrats’ desks, we should focus on Technological Independence. Imagine if IKN becomes:
Cyber & Data Sovereignty Hub: A fortress to protect our national data from foreign control and constant breaches. IKN must be our digital stronghold.
The Silicon Valley of Indonesia: We hold the worldās largest nickel reserves. IKN should be the global center for battery research. Let the world come to learn from us, rather than us remaining spectators and laborers in our own land.

Indonesia is too vast and diverse to be standardized from a central point. IKN must not become “Jakarta 2.0″āanother elitis project. We need a New Mind.
If IKN doesn’t serve as a bureaucratic center, this is actually an opportunity! Turn IKN into a Laboratory of Independence. A place for renewable energy research that empowers remote villages across the archipelago. We don’t need central instructions; we need initiatives that empower the regions.
Remember, true sovereignty is not about where a politicianās chair is placed, but about how independently the people can manage their own natural resources and technology.
A Message for Us All…
We cannot afford to just be a market for foreign goods while our own trillion-rupiah assets go to waste. Indonesia cannot be built by elites alone; it can only be built together if we dare to speak up from the grassroots.
The IKN assets belong to the people, and therefore, the people must decide its direction.
